The Pine Plains Central School District has received a refund of roughly $84,000 from the Internal Revenue Service, representing almost all of the fines it incurred in 2015 and 2016 for problems with filing taxes.

The district had been heavily penalized “due to late payments of withholding taxes and erroneous or incomplete document submissions by the former district treasurer,” according to a Pine Plains press release. Rep. John Faso, R-Kinderhook, reached out to the IRS on behalf of the district to address the fine.

Superintendent Martin Handler said in the release “we are very grateful for Congressman Faso’s support.

“As a result of the Congressman’s efforts, the school district has been able to recover significant taxpayer funds that can now be used to further the district’s educational goals,” she said.

In the release, Faso said he was pleased the IRS addressed his request and “determined that significant fines that ultimately would have to be paid by taxpayers would not serve the best interests of the residents.”
