Charleston BLM leader, from Poughkeepsie, shot and killed in New Orleans
A Poughkeepsie native who was a well-known member of the Charleston Black Lives Matter movement was shot and killed on Tuesday in New Orleans, according to the Charleston Post and Courier.
Muhiyidin Elamin Moye, 32, was shot in the thigh on Bienville Street before 1:30 a.m. Officers discovered him bleeding on the ground near a mountain bike and followed a trail of blood to a bullet fragment elsewhere on Bienville Street.
Moye was transported to an area hospital, where he died later on Tuesday morning, according to the Post and Courier. Police haven’t named a suspect or a motive in the shooting.
Camille Weaver, Moye's niece, told the Post and Courier Moye was in New Orleans for a personal trip.
Moye, who went by the last name d’Baha, grew to prominence in 2015 after he played a role in the release of a video in the fatal police shooting of Walter Scott. He also gained wider recognition in February 2017, when he leapt over police tape to grab a protester’s Confederate flag and a video of the moment went viral.
Additionally, he was arrested in 2016 after interrupting a North Charleston City Council committee meeting to demand the creation of a citizens board to review police actions.
Moye was born in Poughkeepsie and grew up in Hollywood, South Carolina, just west of Charleston, according to the Post and Courier.
