Despite missing its initial 2016 launch window, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is expected to open next month in the Town of Poughkeepsie.

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen plans to open a restaurant in the Town of Poughkeepsie in February.

The 46-seat restaurant will open to the public on Feb. 13 at the former Nellie Kelly's, 535 W. Haight Ave., according to Ed Baksh, construction manager for the franchisee.

The fast-food chain offers a variety of chicken and seafood meals.

Construction at the site was delayed due to a change in general contractor, according to Tim Warren, of Warren Custom Builders, the site's general contractor. Warren confirmed that construction was likely to be complete by February.

"Weather permitting, we're anticipating to be done next month," Warren said.

The once green building has been painted a dark yellow. Restaurant amenities such as tables and chairs have been set up inside, and drive-thru lanes can be found in the back.

Popeyes is expected to hire about 65 people at the restaurant, with interview dates to be announced, Baksh said.

The two closest Popeyes restaurants are about 17 miles south in New Windsor and about 18 miles north in Kingston. The Town of Poughkeepsie location would be the chain's first restaurant in Dutchess County.

Reception to the chain has been positive, and the planning board has been helpful in getting the restaurant off the ground, Baksh said.

"It's a great town, and we're looking forward to be part of it," Baksh said.

Popeyes is part of an influx of chain restaurants opening their first locations in Dutchess County. Hardees, Texas Roadhouse and Tilted Kilt each opened in 2016, while Golden Corral and Chipotle Mexican Grill are anticipated to open in 2017.
