Grace Smith House Afternoon of Champions fundraiser, Sept. 22

Registrations are being accepted until Sept. 8 for the Afternoon of Champions fundraising event Sept. 22 to benefit the Grace Smith House, Poughkeepsie. The event will be held from 2-5 p.m. at the pavilion of the Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum, 75 N. Water St., Poughkeepsie.

Fifty teams of two will compete for prizes in a variety of backyard games and competitions. Registration fee is $250, per team. There are also various sponsorships available.

Grace Smith House, established in 1981, is a private not-for-profit domestic violence agency, which provides residential and non-residential services to victims of domestic violence and their children.

NAMI Mid-Hudson gala, Sept. 13

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Mid-Hudson will honor local partners and volunteers at its second annual gala 5-9 p.m. Sept. 13 at The Grandview, 176 Rinaldi Blvd., Poughkeepsie. The guest speaker will be Kevin Hines, author of “Cracked Not Broken,” who will share his story of survival after jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge in 2000. In 2012, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work as a suicide prevention advocate and speaker by the National Council of Behavioral Health. 

“It is an honor to have Kevin Hines come and speak at our annual gala,” said Tina Lee, executive director. “Kevin’s message to ‘Find Help. Find Hope’ supports our mission. His compelling and inspirational story encourages us all to be compassionate members of our community and to celebrate life.”

7th annual Chefs Farm Fresh Dinner, Sept. 9

The Bannerman Castle Trust will present the seventh annual Chefs Farm Fresh Dinner 3 and 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9 at Bannerman’s Island, located in the Hudson River between Beacon and Cold Spring. Chef Noah Sheetz and members of the Hudson Valley Chefs Consortium will create a five-course meal using locally sourced ingredients. Visitors may enjoy the gardens and tour the new visitor center and museum. The Judith Tulloch Band will provide music during the dinner.

The Estuary Steward tour boat will depart from the Beacon Institute Dock across from the Beacon railroad station. Reservations required. Tickets are $135; $125 for Bannerman Castle Trust friends. Vassar Haiti Project annual art sale, Sept. 15-17

The Vassar Haiti Project will have its annual art sale Sept. 15-17 at Vassar College, 124 Raymond Ave., Poughkeepsie. The sale features art and handcrafts from Haiti. Prices for crafts start at $5, and paintings at $50. 

Proceeds support a medical clinic, education, reforestation, water access and purification and other programs in Chermaitre, a mountain village in Haiti.

The event will be held in the College Center multi-purpose room on the second floor of the Main Building. Hours are noon to 7 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday with a live auction at 2:30 p.m. and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday.

Greystone Programs Inc. will present its 28th annual fundraising wine showcase and auction Sept. 10 at The Grandview, Poughkeepsie.

Annual international wine showcase and auction, Sept. 10

Greystone Programs Inc., Hopewell Junction, a nonprofit human services agency, will present its 28th annual international wine showcase and auction 2:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at The Grandview, 176 Rinaldi Blvd., Poughkeepsie.

Proceeds supports programs for people with developmental disabilities. This year’s event also honors M&T Bank as a business partner, event sponsor and grant provider. The Marcinkowski-Robitaille-Sherman family will be recognized for being a major contribute to Greystone since 1984 when a family member first came to live at a Greystone home.

Wines from around the world will be paired with food. Music provided by bassist Damon Banks, violinist Gwen Laster and guitarist Jeff Armstrong.

Walk the Walk for Recovery, Sept. 17

The Villa Veritas Foundation will have its sixth annual “Walk the Walk for Recovery” Sept. 17 at the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park, Poughkeepsie. The event promotes understanding of drug and alcohol addiction and awareness of treatment options. 

The walk starts at the Poughkeepsie entrance located at 61 Parker Ave. Registration is at 11:30 a.m. with the walk at 12:30 p.m. $25, donation includes a tote bag and bracelet; $50 donation includes tote bag, bracelet and T-shirt; $100 donation includes name on tote bag, in addition to T-shirt and bracelet.

Historic barns and farms tour, Sept. 16

The Winnakee Land Trust will have its annual tour of historic barns and working farms Sept. 16. The tour begins 11 a.m. at Southlands Foundation, 5771 Route 9, Rhinebeck with a closing reception 4:30-6 p.m. at Heermance Farm, 433 W. Kerley Corners Road, Tivoli. The reception will feature food by Chocolate Mousse Catering, locally brewed beer by From the Ground Brewery, wine by Schatzi Wine importers and music by the Steven Michael Pague Ensemble.

The tour is also open to bicyclists and a shuttle service is available. 

Docents will guide visitors through each site. A mapped brochure outlines the self-guided route of eight properties in northern Dutchess County. All barns close at 4 p.m.
