Wappinger Sonic Drive-In closed 'permanently'

As national chains are building local restaurants, the Sonic Drive-In in the Town of Wappinger has closed, according to a post on the company’s Facebook page.

“We apologize, but we are closed permanently,” the company said Friday in response to questions from customers.

On Saturday morning, Town of Wappinger Supervisor Lori Jiava said she was unaware of the closure, as were the town’s code enforcement department and the clerk’s office.

Daser Restaurant Group LLC is the licensed franchisee for SONIC Drive-Ins throughout the Hudson Valley, according to a 2012 news release. The company could not be reached for comment by press time.

A Sonic location in Orange County's New Windsor is still open, the company said on Facebook.

Located in the Hannaford's Plaza on Route 9, the fast food chain known for its drive-in stalls, carhop food servers and multiple drink combinations opened in September 2009, according to Journal archives.

Daser Wappingers Falls LLC leased the space from Wappinger Shopping Center LLC, according to documents filed with the Dutchess County Clerk's Office.

The closure comes as several other national chains are building in Dutchess County.

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen plans to open at the former Nellie Kelly's bar and restaurant at 535 Haight Ave., Poughkeepsie, on the Route 44/55 arterial.

Texas Roadhouse is set to open this month at 2323 South Road in the Town of Poughkeepsie, according to the restaurant's website, after it was originally scheduled to open this winter.

Golden Corral is expected to open at 2345 South Road on Route 9 in the Town of Poughkeepsie in November.

Other planned restaurants include Tilted Kilt in Town of Poughkeepsie and Chipotle Mexican Grill in Fishkill.
