City of Poughkeepsie police responded to a shooting on South Grand Avenue Tuesday, Aug. 9.

City of Poughkeepsie police have charged a city man with murder after a man was found sitting in his car Tuesday morning with multiple gunshot wounds.

Jermaine Johnson, 37, was charged in the death of 42-year-old Davion Reid, also of the City of Poughkeepsie.

Around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, reports came in of shots fired on South Grand Avenue. City of Poughkeepsie Police Capt. Richard Wilson said several people called in about gunfire.

As police arrived on the 100 block of South Grand Avenue amid the single-family homes, they found Reid, also known as Kevin Morris, in the driver's seat of a car with multiple gunshot wounds.

Several shell casings and a sneaker lay on the pavement next to a black Honda sedan, which was parked on the 100 block of South Grand Avenue.

Reid was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Police said later on that day, Johnson was located, arrested, and charged with murder.

Johnson was arraigned Wednesday morning in City of Poughkeepsie court and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail without bail. He is due back in city court Aug. 15.

Joanne Zalesky, 33, who lives nearby on Hooker Avenue, said she was sitting on her porch with her Chihuahua when she heard several gunshots and ran inside.

"It scared me because it was so loud and there were so many shots," she said. "You don't expect to be sitting outside your door and fearing for your life."

According to police, the shooting was not a random act of violence, though they declined to talk about what the possible motive for the killing could be.

Anyone with information on this shooting or who may have witnessed it is asked to call the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department at 845-451-7577.
