Author discussion — Taylor Hall, Room 203, Vassar College, 124 Raymond Ave., Poughkeepsie. 7:30 p.m. July 15. Historian and author Douglas Brinkley will discuss "John Burroughs, Theodore Roosevelt, and the American Conservation Movement." This free public event is co-sponsored by the college's Environmental Studies program and the John Burroughs Association. Brinkley is a professor of history at Rice University. His work on conservation history includes the books "Wilderness Warrior: Theodore Roosevelt and the Crusade for America" and "The Quiet World: Saving Alaska's Wilderness Kingdom, 1879-1960." He is currently writing "Rightful Heritage: Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Land of America." 845-437-5370.

Children's book club — Howland Public Library, 313 Main Beacon. 3-4:30 p.m. July 16. Children entering grades 3-5 this September are welcome to join, Leap Into Reading, the summer book club meeting 3-4:30 p.m. Wednesdays, through Aug. 13. Using a book of their own choosing, students will utilize the English arts and literacy skills they are working on in school to discover character development, plots, conclusions and new worlds. Lighthouse lecture — Howland Public Library, 313 Main St., Beacon. 2 p.m. July 16. Author Kevin Woyce will discuss the history of lighthouses, from the ancient Pharos of Alexandria to the modern world; show how they were built and how they work; and share the stories of some of the brave men and women who tended the lights. The program is illustrated with original photographs of lighthouses along the East Coast, the Hudson River, Long Island Sound, and the Great Lakes, plus vintage images of historic and vanished lights. Copies of Woyce's books on lighthouses will be available for sale and signing. 845-831-1134.

Local history author/speaker series — Adriance Memorial Library, 93 Market St., Poughkeepsie. 10-11:30 a.m. July 1. Second program on "Just Frank: My Life as an Intrepid Inventor" with Frank Reick. Born in Poughkeepsie, he has been inventing since he was age 5 and has 40 patents to his name. His inventions include diagnostic medical instruments, toys, ski wax and lubricants. Part of Poughkeepsie Public Library District's five-week series with authors who write about local people, places and events.
